Dream Big. Be Brave. Live Life Colorfully.

It’s that time of year again – time to think about resolutions and goals for 2013. I won’t talk about losing weight either!

One of my inspirational experiences in 2012 was speaking to a group of girls from GIRLS, Inc. who came to Company C to learn about what we do. Our mission was to inspire them to stay in school and work hard at what they love and dream about. The girls ranged in age from 10 to 15.

So we sat in our colorful retail store while they ate their after school snacks. I started the conversation talking about Company C and how we started 19 years ago. I mentioned that when I was their age I loved to knit and sew and used to make a lot of my own clothes. I shared with them many kids thought I was such a nerd and so “uncool” for knitting and sewing.

I asked them if they do something now that they love, yet keep it to themselves for fear of what others might say. They all responded with their own similar experiences. It was so fun to hear their stories. After these lively discussions, I reminded them that if I didn’t stick to what I loved and didn’t work hard at it and didn’t give up when the going got tough, I could not have achieved my dreams of starting my own business and creating products I love.

So as I think about the message I learned from the girls, it’s important to be brave no matter our age. Dream big, work hard and stick to it, even with adversity.

My New Years resolution is to create a living space which reflects who I am.  Right now I think it is a mismatched space which lacks the color and inspiration it deserves.  I redid one room in my house with a company c rug as the main focal point and it looks terrific. I would like my living room to look as good or better.  I resolve to show my colorful spirit in a new room which reflects who I am.

I am a huge fan of color so
not surprisingly I am a huge fan of color so not surprisingly Company Cs range of bold colored products from rugs to
furnishings inspires me everytime I visit the store. I have many strong but
warm colors and playful patterns in my home from my family room to my kitchen and even laundry room.  The one lackluster space is my dining room.
The crème stenciled walls and blue silk plaid curtains are too boring and  interrupt the flow of
color in the adjoining rooms and need some revitalization. The room, devoid of
color, just does not seem to fit in with the rest of my home. My New Year’s
resolution is to redecorate this room with a Company C Jolie rug as the
backdrop for an infusion of color which will tie the hues in the adjoining
rooms together.  I am fortunate to have a
mother who is an artist.  Many of her
paintings adorn my walls and complement the furniture and colors in the rugs
and curtains.  I plan on using two of her
paintings as focal points in the dining room to highlight the warm colors in
the  Jolie rug and to finally bring this
room the oomph that it needs and the design that I crave!!!

The dining room is to the
left of my home’s front entrance.  I just
purchased a Tiffany rug (wine color) for the front entry.  I plan to purchase a 4 by 6 Tiffany rug in
the next few weeks as a second rug for the entry way.  The colors in the rug combine colors in both
the dining and living room and help the strong colors in both rooms to flow
    seamlessly.

    For example, The “wine” color
in the rug, ties in a similar accent color in my living room, which is the room
to the right of the entrance way. The greens in the rug also pull in the colors
of a beautiful Candace Lovely original painting on the wall which depicts a
woman reclining on a hill overlooking a lake with lily pads.  It is the orange /yellow scrolls in the center
of the Tiffany rug that have relevance to this project though.   I plan
to use that orangey color for the curtains in the dining room. There is a deep
orange colored fabric by Susan Sargent (curtsey in saffron) which I have in
mind.  Equally tantalizing is Company C’s Cascade fabric in bittersweet which would bring in the colors and design for a perfect match. Simple panels with a gathered top and black rod bars
should complement the simple but lovely décor I plan for the room.

It is the Jolie Company C rug
that will really pull all of the colors from the family room and kitchen to the
dining room together (would love to share these photos  through my facebook page to give you an idea of the plan). The blues, oranges and

yellows in the rug will tie
in with the bright family room colors. I also plan to paint the walls either a
blend of blues in a faux finish, or in the alternative, I will use “distemper”
blue paint which will give the room a “washed” look.

This is a natural choice as
it is a complement to orange and because blue is a prominent color in the Jolie
rug. The blue walls will pick up the periwinkle blue accents in my family room
in the furniture, pillows and curtains all inspired by Susan Sargent designs.

I have two of my mother’s
paintings in mind. One is a landscape with a rock formation on a shore with
black, oranges, yellows. I plan to place that over the buffet. On the wall
opposite the dining room table my mother’s painting of a foreboding cloud
surrounded by a firey sunset sky will accent the room with oranges, yellows and
blacks (both on my facebook page).

I plan to replace the antique
dining set with a more simple but modern design of  Circle Furniture: The Woodstock dining table
with #18 dining room chairs.  The Hammock
cerulean blue fabric in Company C’s collection will cover this furniture
nicely.  The fanciful patterns and bright colors of Company C designs fit in perfectly with my home and have helped me to create my inspiration for 2013.

my resolution is to clean out all the things that people have given me that aren’t me – I want to fill my house with lightness and color.  Clutter be gone!  I feel most at peace and happy when I’ve cleared out all the extras and claimed a space as my own – eclectic, colorful and alive.
