Igniting a colorful fire!

One of the greatest joys for me is watching a customer’s first experience with Company C. Vegas ShowroomWhen they open the door to one of our retail stores—whether Concord, Portland or Hingham—or at one of our wholesale showrooms, they stop for a minute, look around, take a breath and say “wow!” As Co-founder and Design & Creative Director, this is my favorite thing to witness, over and over again. It means we’ve been successful at creating an exciting shopping experience—causing a desire to explore more!

They’ll start meandering through the store or showroom, taking in the various vignettes, whether a living room for a coastal getaway or a bedroom that would be great for a city loft. Colorful combinations of textures and patterns.

IMG_4156 Sometimes, after a customer has walked through the store, they’ll ask, “so much color, how can I get this in my home?” and “Where do I begin, my house is all beige?” and “I have mostly brown, red and gold, how do I incorporate color?” I love hearing this—we’ve ignited a fire in their imaginations.

For the rug—the foundation the room–my recommendation is to start with the colors you love, not with what’s in trend, if you begin with your favorite color(s), they’ll never be out of trend. Then pick out the rugs that fit this palette. Take them home and see how they oct 09 floor move 010look on your floor and in your own light—day and night. Pick out the one that you’re ready to build your room around. You cannot go wrong if you love the colors. Freshen up with colorful trend accents such as pillows, throws and decorative accessories that are easier to freshen up after a few seasons.

And then, the icing on the cake…hearing a customer walk out the door saying…“bye, bye beige.”

What is your most daring color story?

    Hi Chris,

We have blond/yellow maple floors, and a lot of different wood in our house. Cherry cabinetry, ash beams, fir trim. We also have a very dark reddish brick fireplace. I want a colorful, light room, but my challenge...I have two small children and so as much as I would love to go with a light colored couch, I think the safe bet is a rich brown, with a colorful rug, pillows and chair. I love oranges, blues, and green. The rugs that have the colors that I love are:

Sun Kissed - rug is a bit too contemporary I think.
    Dandelion Green
    Prescott Park
    Trumpet Vine Green
Give a Hoot - LOVE those colors!

    Any advice is appreciated!

The Prescott Park could be a great choice--great design and lots of your favorite colors. We'll send this sample along with the Dandelion and Trumpet Vine (love this one!). Give a Hoot is one size only so am not sure this will work, but a very fun and textural rug. Have a great weekend.

    Chris,

I am up late again, sitting here with my latest fabric swatches and trying to come up with a color scheme for my home when I just read your latest blog post. It's so timely....I just told my husband that I keep coming home with earthy, neutral, and "safe" colors swatches, when I really want energy, punch and a little personality. I live in Bend, Oregon, and this town is saturated with Craftsman homes. We bought a prarie style home 8 years ago, and I finally have a budget to decorate but am having a hard time translating my vision to designers that are helping me, and having a hard time integrating your styles into my home. No one here is currently a rep for your line, and so I haven't seen your rugs in person. But, I keep coming back to your website and drooling over the color! I just need to follow your advice and buy a rug that I love and use that as my foundation. Thanks for the color inspiration!

Tell us what your greatest challenges have been when you're selecting the colors. I was also wondering what your wood floor color is...We have dark wood floors in our house--they have a reddish/brownish cast to them-- and I find it amazing how different rugs look on them. Rugs with the same ground cast don't look as good on these floors--they need to be more vibrant or contrasting. Let me know your favorite colors and floor color and we can send you some samples so you can see the styles and quality yourself. Can't wait to hear! Thanks, Chris
