GoodWeave’s One in a Million Campaign

A member since 2005, Company C is proud to be part of GoodWeave USA. We support GoodWeave as it unveils One in a Million, the nonprofit’s new campaign to bring attention to its market-based solution to end child labor in the handmade rug industry. The campaign, whose flagship ad (seen below) appears in the February 2011 issue of dwell, made its official debut at the Atlanta International Area Rug Market January 13-16.

The campaign draws its inspiration from the estimated one million children exploited in the carpet-making industry when GoodWeave began its work in 1994, and the one million or more knots that go into each handcrafted rug. GoodWeave has helped reduce the incidence of child labor in South Asia’s handmade rug industry by an estimated 75 percent.

Iris and Witching Hour Farm – Part Two

Part two of our series, Iris and Witching Hour Farm, a project that was inpsired by our Iris design. The color is coming to life! Here are thoughts from the artist, Sarah El-Jallad:

Inspiration: The Iris’s movement canopies the person in the chase, and breaks up the angles of the wall. I also think it’s great that the room brings the organic and geometric elements together harmoniously.

Her process: I scoped out where I wanted the Iris positioned, and that largely depended on how I could make it interact with the wall’s harsh angle, and not seem awkward to the eye.
Once the outline was established, I used wet cloth to wash in color, and outline the edges. I wanted the outline to be smooth, and transition well from light to dark — erasing the pigment with the wet cloth worked to my advantage in creating that smooth transition, because it eliminated the harsh brush stroke.
The setting I think is great — the room is small, so blowing up the motif of the pillow’s small iris onto the wall I think creates a surreal, simple, and yet interesting composition for the viewer upon entering.

Media used: Acrylic, wet cloth, wall paint, water, brushes.

    Design, Decorating and Dominos

We’re always ecstatic when one of our designs inspires someone! Check out the blog post from Maison Decor – a great designer from the Boston area who recently purchased one of our April Blooms rugs from our Concord store. She made it the centerpiece of her living room and it prompted a redecorating project in both her living room and dining room! She takes you through the process step-by-step here. We highly recommend her blog for great tips!

Iris and Witching Hour Farm – Part One

We are thrilled to introduce part one of our series, “Iris and Witching Hour Farm.” Guest blogger and designer Tracey Davidson of The Furniture Solution in West Friendship, MD, shares with us the process of putting together this project – including a room inspired by a Company C pillow! Stay tuned as we watch the room transform from a blank slate to the beautiful finished product!

When I previewed Witching Hour Farm I loved the setting and knew I’d wanted to be involved.   The little room on the third floor was cozy and inviting, I remembered the Iris pillow I’d seen on the Company C site and new that it would be a perfect starting point for my design.

     Here is the room description:

This warm, cozy space is a place to escape from the demands of a busy life.  Inspired by the pillow on the inviting chaise lounge, walls are washed in a golden tan and accented with yellow, leaf and iris.  The long wall is enveloped by a hand painted mural of irises. The mural technique plays with scale – the small scale of the room contradicts, and accents the large scale of the painting. Colors are directly touching without harsh line, or linear composition.  The room’s style is crisp and clean.  All family members will want to linger in this personal retreat to read, write or watch the birds in the trees…
