HOW TO BUY A RUG: PART 1

Selecting the ideal area rug for your home can be an exciting—though sometimes daunting— experience. When done right, it can elevate the overall feel and create a space that speaks to who you are. With so many beautiful options out there, where do you even start? Let us help find that perfect rug that is “the one”

What room are you shopping for?

Consider the primary purpose of your room and what room this rug will live in. Is it a high-traffic area like a living room or a quieter space like a bedroom? This will help determine the appropriate material, pattern and color of the rug. We have a great guide on the types of fibers and constructions we use to help better understand the best style for the purpose. For instance, if the room is the kitchen, then choose a rug that is easy to spot clean. In an entry, wool is a perfect fiber because of how durable and naturally stain resistant it is. For a bedroom, rugs with viscose provide the perfect softness for bare feet. Are there animals at home? If your dog has long nails and gets the ‘zoomies’ or your cat loves the feel of textures, choose a rug that has a compact, even surface or a cut pile. Perhaps an animal is aging or has a sensitive system, an indoor/outdoor rug could be the best choice without losing the hand-feel of a wool rug.

Care is simple for our rugs but there are a few things to know.

  • All wool rugs will shed initially. That is just the nature of a natural fiber and the weaving process.
  • Vacuum using the bare floor setting. This raises the beater bar so that it won’t inadvertently catch a loop and damage the rug. Should a yarn tail ever come loose, clip the yarn evenly with the rug surface.
  • We recommend turning the rug every 6-9 months for more even wear.
  • Spot clean stains with the foam of a gentle detergent like Dawn dish detergent. Place a small amount of the detergent in a bowl and add some water at room temperature. Dab a clean cloth into the foam and blot the stain. Place a dry, clean cloth over the damp area to help draw up any moisture.
  • For liquid spills, cover the wet area with a dry substance like salt or baking powder to draw up the liquid. Vacuum up and reapply dry material until most of the moisture is gone. Place a dry, clean cloth over the damp area to help draw up any moisture.
  • Do not use a steam cleaner—handheld, domestic or commercial. The hot water will break down the backing and significantly shorten the lifespan of the rug.
  • For a deep clean, contact a professional rug cleaner and be sure they provide dry cleaning services for rugs with a heavy cotton backing.
  • The same rules apply to our indoor/outdoor rugs with an exception. These designs are made with synthetic fibers and a net backing and can be hosed off for even easier cleaning.
  • To dry an indoor/ outdoor design, allow air access through the top and bottom of the rug and for the rug to be lying flat. Wrinkles or folds may be left if hung over a railing. If this happens simply rewet the rug to help flatten the rug once again.
