HOW TO BUY A RUG: PART 2

After considering the location, it’s time to establish your room style. What is the overall look and feel of the space? What style are you hoping to achieve?

How do I find the right style?

Ask yourself: is this rug the main character or more of a supporting role? A bold rug can make a statement and serve as the focal point to build a room around using the pattern, style or color. A more subtle rug can complement existing rugs or decor to create a cohesive look. It’s important to choose a rug that fits your personal taste and style. Intuition plays a big role here. It’s important to not allow what is trendy overshadow a rug that speaks to you.

Next, consider what feeling the room should have. Some people want their family room to have bold colors to add energy and hide any of life’s imperfections, but in a bedroom, a calming color or pattern after a busy day might be the right choice.

Traditional, striped, floral, oh my! How do you choose?

Bold patterns may seem bright at first, but will surprise you with how easily they fall away once furnishings and accessories are placed in the room. Patterns like these are the heroes of busy family rooms as they can help camouflage everyday life while never losing their style.

Who says subtle patterns have to be dull and lifeless? Bring tranquility into the bedroom or reading nook by playing with textures and gentle patterns..

Now for the fun part! Observe your room’s palette, and determine the three most used colors that exist or could be introduced in this space. There may be one overall color and two accents or two complementary colors and an accent. Within those 3 colors, play with color families—a light blue and a dark blue or a deep rust and an orange that pops. You can add more color, or simplify with one hue amongst a neutral backdrop. As the top choices begin to emerge, our 1’x1’ samples will help get a better idea of how a rug’s colors, patterns and textures interact with the room’s existing decor, lighting, furniture and flooring. Additionally, testing with a sample rug can help identify any potential issues or concerns with the rug’s thickness, fiber, texture or design before committing to a larger purchase. Take your time and experiment with different options to find the perfect rug that will add warmth, comfort, and visual appeal.

Hot tip:

Don’t shy away from pattern play! Sometimes, a space might need matching rugs or a neutral supporting rug, but not always. In fact, by working within a color story and balancing patterns, you can create more design depth in a space. How do you do that? Consider the focal point rug—is it a swirl of pattern or organic shape? Try balancing it with a stripe. Is a third rug needed that will visually flow through the space? Perhaps add a small geometric pattern. Try mixing in something with a texture to help create more visual interest.
