What was the inspiration behind our Chelsea rug?

The namesake of New York’s famed flower market, our new Chelsea rug is a welcome breath of spring-time inspiration as snow continues to blanket much of the country.  This botanical beauty was a blast to design, and the process anything but traditional.  The first step was to collect the floral specimens and greens from which to build a diverse and vivid color story.

We then “placed” these spiked blooms and leaves on our canvas, and moved them over and over again until we struck the right balance of height, color and texture.  This created the inspiration to be shared with our rug craftsmen. We combined various yarn textures with several tufting techniques, creating visual delight.

The final version of the Chelsea rug features a strong statement  of navy and burgundy, two of this season’s most on-trend colors.  And like the sidewalks of New York’s flower district, a textural and tweedy background of un-dyed wool pops the saturated colors of flowers bringing spring indoors a little early this year.

Recipe for the coziest autumn afternoon…

Our Hickory Hand Tufted Rug & Confetti Throw

Whether with a good book by your side, or binge-watching your new favorite programming on Netflix, some week-ends are made for total relaxation… the inspiration for our Weekender collection, and our Hickory hand-tufted rug. Snuggled up in our sumptuous Confetti throw with the first fire of the season crackling is something to savor, and begs for the perfect lunch. Hearty, flavorful, and easy… here are the key steps to a delicious grilled cheese sandwich that will pair nicely with a novel… or the remote control.

What you will need: bread or brioche of choice, butter and/or mayonnaise, brie cheese with rind removed, and fig jam.

Preheat a skillet to medium-low heat. While the skillet warms:

  • Butter one side of each slice of bread. Some of our “Company C chefs” swear mayonnaise browns more evenly, the choice is yours
  • Remove the rind from the brie, and cut into slices
  • Once the skillet is evenly hot, place a slice of bread “butter (or mayonnaise) side” down in the pan. Add brie slices and an even, light layer of fig jam to the bread in the pan, then place the second piece of bread on top “butter (or mayonnaise) side” up

  • Allow the cheese to melt and the bottom of the sandwich to attain a golden brown

Then flip and repeat. Each side, dependent on stove and pan, may require up to three minutes. The key is a medium low temperature for melty cheese and golden browning. Higher heats will speed the process… but burn the bread.

This recipe can be augmented based on what is in the kitchen. We love the sweet savory nature of the brie and the fig jam, but even fresh blue berries with the brie would work. Enjoy… the sandwich and your lazy cozy fall week-end!

How to Select the Perfect Rug!

There is a perfect rug for anywhere you need one, but the challenges of foot traffic, moisture, and other environmental factors should be a part of your selection process in addition to the color and design.  With so many construction methods and materials, we thought that a simple and abridged approach to rugs types and their best uses might be helpful!

Hand-tufted wool rugs are made with thick and sumptuous yarns, and feel luxurious underfoot.  These rugs are best suited for medium and low traffic areas including living and family rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms.  19235-BLUE-ALT6

Hand-hooked wool rugs, composed of smaller loops, have a lower pile and profile than a tufted rug.  Hooked rugs meet the demands of all traffic levels from bedrooms to kitchens, and are best used in a dry location as opposed to any entryway or mud room.

Hand-tufted cut and loop pile wool rugs are an excellent choice for any room, and offer up lots of visual interest via their surface texture.  These rugs are ready to take on all your traffic patterns.

10199-MULTI-ALT2Bamboo viscose is a new yarn for its soft shimmer and shine, and for its ability to become saturated with dyes yielding spectacular colors.  It is soft and luxurious, so we like to think of bamboo viscose as cashmere for your floor.  Hand spun bamboo viscose rugs are best suited for your dressier spaces that experience lower traffic such as living rooms and bed rooms.

Polypropylene hooked and flatweave rugs are perfect for any space, indoors or out.  These rugs take a beating, can be cleaned with a garden hose, and stand up to all traffic levels including that of mudrooms, porches, and entryway.  Yet they look just right in a family room, bedroom, or kitchen.
